Days 41 and 42 August 22-23 Devil's Tower WY

America's first National Monument

After a relatively short ride (about 129 miles) we arrived at the Devil's Tower KOA where many of us would satisfy a bucket list item, and all of us gazed with awe on this fabulous geological feature.  After getting settled in, some of us even  took advantage of the cooler evening to hike around the tower, which is America's first National Monument.  The rest of us enjoyed the wonderful view of this great rock monolith soaring 1,000 feet above the campground and visible from every campsite.

A car show at the campground.

Early next morning many more of us set out to hike around the tower, and what a hike it was! We saw a deer and fawn feeding near the trail and chipmunks and brown squirrels scurrying over the rocks.  We saw climbers making their way up the tower and talked to the mother of one of them who was watching her 18 year old son, a Marine recruit, make his way up the side of the rock.  We saw prayer bundles and cloths tied in the trees by Indians, to whom this great rock is sacred.

Go John, go!

We did it!

On the way back to the campground we passed a prairie dog village and stopped to watch the antics of these entertaining animals.
